Lachung is a charming mountain village nestling at an altitude of around 9000 feet, close to the Tibet border. The Lachung Chu River – one of the tributaries of the mighty River Teesta criss-crosses the Lachung Valley. Lachung literally means “small pass”. Embraced by spectacular waterfalls, snow covered mountain peaks, cascading streams and apple orchards, Lachung is simply heaven on earth. This North Sikkim mountain village is renowned for its peaches, apples and apricots. Earlier, Lachung served as a trading post between Tibet and Sikkim. In recent time, tourism is boosting the economy of the town considerably. Majority of the inhabitants of Lachung are of Tibet and Lepcha descent, who usually interact in Lepcha, Nepali and Bhutia languages. British writer and explorer Joseph Dalton has described Lachung in the book ‘The Himalayan Journal’ as the “most picturesque village of Sikkim”.

 

Places to see at Lachung, North Sikkim

The crowning attraction of Lachung is the beautiful Lachung Monastery or Gompa. Founded in 1880 AD, it is set amidst beautiful apple orchards. Decorated with some of the most beautiful murals, the monastery is a “must see” if you are visiting Lachung. You can also visit the handicraft center, where locally woven exquisite blankets and rugs are sold. Lachung also serves as the stopover town to visit far flung destinations like Yumthang Valley, Yumesamdong (Zero Point) and Katao. Yumthang Valley is home to the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, where more than 24 species of Rhododendron bloom during March and April every year. The snaking Yumthang Chu river from through Yumthang Valley. Katao is another beautiful destination around 30 kms from Lachung.

 

Best time to visit Lachung, North Sikkim

Lachung can be visited anytime of the year. If you are fond of changing colours on rugged cliffs and valleys then April to June should be your season. However, snow lovers should visit Lachung to experience endless stretches of white landscapes in winter. October is for apples and mid March to mid April is for Rhododendrons.
